+400'000 Android apps for MeeGo Harmattan
Now in June 2012 OpenMobile seems to be working on a compatibility
Layer for MeeGo Harmattan, which should give us N9 users access to over
400'000 Android applications.
Even before the N9 was officially released, there were rumors about a possibility to run Android applications on MeeGo Harmatten using a compatibility layer.
Myriad Group was the first to officially announce a way (called Alien Dalvik) to operate Android applications on non-Android devices and showed promising videos like a Nokia N900 running a Android Photoshop application. Another creator of a similar project called ACL (Application Compatibility Layer) is OpenMobile which promises to use the Android ecosystem on other platforms.
Unfortunately many excited Nokia N9 users had to face a disappointement, because Alien Dalvik and OpenMobile's ACL only has been made available for OEMs (manufacturers) but not end-users - the hope to have Android apps on MeeGo Harmattan was fading away. But some hope is still there, and actually good news coming directly from OpenMobile.

Samsung snaps up CSR's mobile development operations for £200m
Samsung has made a big investment in mobile connectivity and location
services, buying the relevant development operations and technology from
venerable UK chipmaker CSR.
The $310m (£198m) purchase is mainly a play for future technology, as
CSR gets to hang onto its existing Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi and NFC
connectivity products and the associated revenues. According to a statement
on Tuesday, Samsung will get "all of the resources devoted to the
development of [CSR's] handset connectivity technology and a significant
proportion of the resources dedicated to the development of handset
location technology, including 310 employees together with certain
associated fixed assets".
Next iPhone Has Thinner Screen
HONG KONG—Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) next iPhone, currently being manufactured
by Asian component makers, will use a new technology that makes the
smartphone's screen thinner, people familiar with the matter said, as
the U.S. technology giant strives to improve technological features
amid intensifying competition from Samsung Electronics Co. (005930.SE)
and other rivals.
Japanese liquid-crystal-display makers Sharp Corp. and Japan Display
Inc.—a new company that combined three Japanese electronics makers'
display units—as well as South Korea's LG Display Co. (LPL) are
currently mass producing panels for the next iPhone using so-called
in-cell technology, the people said.
Jolla: A New Smartphone Startup In A Crowded Market
Made up of former Nokia employees, Jolla was a product of Nokia’s “Bridge” – the project to relocate employees whose roles at Nokia were eliminated by the decision to move away from MeeGo and from Symbian as a smartphone OS. Nokia has even opened up a number of patents to assist Jolla’s development of a recognizably Nokia-heritaged fork to the long-running mobile Linux project.
(UPDATE: It turns out that the Finnish source of this information may have assumed too much: Nokia has clarified that they were not transferring patents to this or any other Bridge beneficiaries. They may be licensing them, but are not commenting on that. So, it seems like that Jolla MeeGo will build largely on “stock” MeeGo. How much this will impact the user experience is at this point an open question – a lot would depend on the UI experience, which was always going to be Jolla’s own creation.)

Jolla Mobile to announce first MeeGo phone this year
Jolla Mobile, the company that was founded by Nokia's former MeeGo
strike-force, has been somewhat open to the media these days, revealing
some interesting bits of info regarding its eventual upcoming devices.
In an interview with Tech Crunch, Jolla's CEO, Jussi Hurmola, has talked about the company's plans to bring not one, but two MeeGo smartphones to the market next year. One of those smartphones would be targeted to the mass-market, general consumer, while the other will be designed with devs and hackers in mind. That really seems like an ambitious effort, considering that Jolla currently has no more than 50 employees, although they do claim they are hiring "aggressively".
Ex-Nokia guys start mystery company to build Linux-based phones
A six-man group of open-source diehards from Nokia have teamed up to
form Jolla Mobile, a company focused on building phones using the
Linux-based MeeGo operating system.
Rather, MeeGo will be a sort of jumping-off point. On its Twitter page,
Jolla advisor and former MeeGo product manager Jukka Eklund wrote, “We
are developing [our] own smartphone OS based on MeeGo… our own UI… for
new products.”
Jolla will soon be making announcements about its version of MeeGo as well as a brand new smartphone it’s bringing to market.
The company so far is composed of “N9 core professionals and MeeGo
community alumni,” the page reads. While N9 folks will be at the helm,
there is no intention to offer support for Nokia’s N9 smartphones — more
on those later.
Angry Birds maker's new franchise
Angry Birds maker Rovio launches new Amazing Alex franchise.
Rovio - the creator of the hit Angry Birds video games - is releasing its first new franchise since 2009.
Amazing Alex's performance will be closely watched after the firm's earlier series racked up more than one billion downloads.
Players must arrange objects on screen to create a chain reaction in which each piece of the puzzle has an effect on another until the goal is achieved.
One analyst said the firm might find it hard to repeat its previous success.
Unlike Rovio's other games, Amazing Alex began its life outside the Finnish firm.

Galaxy S III Spontaneous Combustion Tale
Galaxy S III Spontaneous Combustion Tale Was a Hoax
Everyone loves a good spontaneous combustion story, which is probably why the media jumped all over a forum posting last month by an Irish Samsung Galaxy S III user who claimed their phone had burst into flames in their car.
"So I [sic] driving along today with my Galaxy S3 in my car mount when
suddenly a white flame, sparks and a bang came out of the phone,"
Boards.ie forum user "dillo2k10" wrote on June 20. "I pulled in to look
at my phone, [it] burned from the inside out. Burned through the
plastic and melted [the] case to my phone."
While the tale was a good one, it was also just a tale. Following the
publishing of a report Friday by Fire Investigations, a firm hired by
Samsung to investigate the
incident, the user came clean.
"I would like to retract my original statement," dillo2k10 wrote.
"The damage to the phone was caused by another person, although they
were attempting to recover the phone from water this later caused the
damage shown on the phone. It occurred due to a large amount of
external energy and there was no fault with the phone. This was not a
deliberate act but a stupid mistake."
The "large amount of external energy" is believed to have come from a microwave.
In his report
for Fire Investigations, investigator Peter Mansi noted that the
physical damage to the phone's internal components did not appear to
have been created from energy within the handset but rather from an
external source. He added that the phone's antenna is a passive component unconnected to
a power source. "It is, however," he added, "a suitable conductor for
microwave energy and our tests clearly demonstrated this."
He also suggested that Samsung question the phone's owner as to why the
moisture detection patch had been removed from the device.
Following the youth's report of the flaming Galaxy S III, a Samsung
customer service rep visited the user and replaced the damaged unit and
promised him some free stuff. It's unknown whether Samsung will
repossess the replacement phone.
The Samsung Galaxy S III was released in June and has received rave reviews. Samsung expects to ship 10 million of the units worldwide by the end of this month.

Google Nexus 7 Tablet
Let’s talk about the specifications first.
In line with previous rumors, the tablet features a 7-inch display with a not-so-surprising HD resolution of 1280×800. It uses IPS display technology which is just geek-speak for “great colors” and “wide viewing angles” but, because of its resolution, not necessarily the greatest sharpness (that award goes to the new iPad with its 2048×1536 display).
The tablet will be powered by a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 chip clocked in at 1.3GHz. Graphics will be handled with a 12-core GeForce GPU. Rounding it all up, the Nexus 7 tablet will come with a now-standard 1GB RAM. All of this adds up to a smooth-as-butter performance in both everyday apps and the latest video games.
In another step to reduce manufacturing costs, Google has decided to not include a rear-facing camera unlike most tablets. There will be only a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera suitable for video chatting.
Connectivity options include the usual Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Continuing the trend of including NFC chips, you will be able to use services like Google Wallet and Android Beam on the Nexus 7.
As expected, the tablet will be based on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. We’ve discussed Jelly Bean’s key features – significantly smoother user-interface, better notifications, offline-voice typing and improved voice commands – in a separate post here.
Undoubtedly the most important aspect of the Nexus 7 tablet, the one thing that set its apart from other tablets – both Android and others – is its price. For an unbeatable price of $199, you’re getting a full blown Android tablet (unlike the Kindle Fire) with the most commonly used features. This is a device that I will definitely consider before I get my first tablet – it’s either going to be a new iPad or the Nexus 7.
Nexus 7 can be ordered right now from the Google Play Store for $199 for 8GB model and $249 for 16GB model. You can choose between two colors, black and white. It will come with $25 Google Play credit, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, The Bourne Dominion and include subscriptions to magazines like Popular Science and others. Nexus 7 will be initially available in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. Shipping will begin mid-July.
